Ah, the original Bloons. Words do not explain the nostalgia I get when I play this game. Sitting down in my elementary school classroom, playing the game on a math website... ah, the memories. Now it's time to see how I review the game that started it all (all = the BTD series).
Tutorial / Understanding of the Game: Total 5 points
So as far as I remember, this game had no real tutorial, but honestly, any toddler can get the concept. Aim the projectiles toward to bloons to hit them. Really simple; easy to understand.
Tutorial Score: 5 of 5
Functionality (How the Controls are): Total 10 Points
Honestly, really simple controls. Aim your mouse at where you want to shoot, hold down your mouse for the strength, and release to shoot. Couldn't be more simple than that.
Functionality Score: 10 of 10
Visual Graphics: Total 10 Points
Not the best thing ever, but come on. This game was made in, what, 2007? And as far I know, it was made by two regular guys. Give them a break! For 2007 graphics and for what they had, the graphics are good!
Visual Graphics Score: 8 of 10
Sound and Music: Total 10 Points
Okay, there was no music, so that's eh. Just the sound of popping bloons. Ah, those popping sounds... Even more nostalgia. But to think of it, no sort of music would even fit this game well, which that should be considered something negative toward to game, though some could argue.
Sound and Music Score: 7 of 10
Difficulty: Total 15 Points
It seems like the easiest game ever, right? WRONG. This game gets insanely hard after just a few levels, and it becomes when there's timed stuff involved. I think that the difficulty is really good, though I think it's leaning a bit toward the too-hard side. Nothing crazy, though.
Difficulty Score: 13 of 15
Replayability (how fun a game is that I feel the urge to replay it): Total 15 Points
I used to play this ALL THE TIME, so it was very much replayable at the time. Maybe that's because there were not many other good games on that website. Even nowadays, I go back to play it, but I usually quit after playing the really hard levels. Still, I go back to play it.
Replayability Score: 14 of 15
Creativity: Total 15 Points
Seems like the most simple thing you can think of, right? Popping bloons? But then when there are monkeys involved, hardly anybody would have been able to think of that one! The creators did an absolutely excellent job at coming up with a simple game, yet making something so different out of it, while keeping it fun, interesting, and the monkey concept even becomes normal if one plays it enough. Bravo.
Creativity Score: 15 of 15
Developer Effort: Total 20 Points
Two guys made this game. It became viral. Is that all I have to say? Maybe, but I'll get further into this. I've made my own game before, and I put semi-decent effort into it (probably worth 9 points if I reviewed it here). But these two people created a game that seems so simple, yet I know myself that if I tried to make that game, I would fail miserably. I cannot rate this game too high, since this is a simple game compared to many, but I cannot rate it too low, because of the hard thought put into the game.
Developer Effort Score: 17 of 20
Now lets add up all the scores. The final score is...
89 out of 100! B+
A B+ is pretty good overall, well above an average game. So this is the current best score on my reviews, but then again, this is only the second one. Oh well, we'll just have to continue and see if anything can beat this.

As always, if you agree or disagree, please tell me why in the comments below. :)

ReplyDeleteI disagree lel,
there wasnt a tutorial, yet early rounds were EZ
3/5
functions:
it wasnt complex enough, didnt give enough variability
2/10
visuals
2007... thats still a reasonable period of time where you can't cut somebody slack for visual graphics.
2.5/10
sounds:
no music, sounds were monotone
3/10
difficulty
its EZ what r u talking about
5/15
replayable:
this ones a matter of preferance
i'd think a 15/15 would be something like super meat boy or the binding of isaac or btdb or btd5 (note: btd5 isnt THAT replayable, unless ur a completionist for getting 100% achevments). Bloons isnt the type of game to be replayed, sure you can come back to it, but you wont be playing it like once a week. I'd also sugest to make this worth 25 instead of 15. am remove 10 from develepor effort.
3/15
creative:
its simple yes, i think this is an EZ catagory to score on, infact i think this catagory should have its definistion to be changed. yes. instead of having it be one of a kind at that time, we should make it so that the more you cant link this game/remind yourself of other games as you play it, the more points it gets. for example, Dodge That Piggy. It's basically a small bullet hell type game which reminds me of most Platformers like I Wanna Be That Guy or that Hush fight in Isaac
5/15
effort into creation
they had no goals lel, no fanbase, no real expectation :{
maybe they liked to create a game, maybe this was a school thing that they desided to put online. as for making your own game compared to having another make it. Yah, its not effortless but it's still, like, no effort lel
7/20
total?
30/100
its like a D rated game.
playable, not something for recommendation, especially if you dont want to be called gaiy by a friend for telling some, "here play this game, its a B+ by Har N's standards" but then you relise you dont got no friends so you tell ur online people, "hey check this lel" then u link the game. But since ur in a certain community, they will have already played the game and think it was good because they played it a long time ago as well as someone else did play it and think it was good. I feel like i rambles
SS (matter of preference) = 100% Accuracy (a game u'd play over and over again)
S = Over 90% (Some replayable game that you enjoy)
A = Over 80% (emotionally linked games that cut deep)
B = Over 70% (btd5 & btdb level lel)
C = Over 60% (u play this when ur bored / with family (mario, board games, etc))
D = Anything else. (poor games in general, things you dont care about if anything happens to it. a c level game might get an update that you would rather do something else than check it)
F = It's physically repulsive lel, shouldnt even be reviewed (please dont review like mario and sonic and the olimpic games, i died playing it)
total is actually 30.5/100 i think
DeleteI see what you mean. Everything here was rated too high than what it should have. Eh, I've changed the rubric for future reviews and have been reviewing them more harshly.
